Mountain Biking
Mountain biking is gaining popularity in Bhutan. The Bhutan
Mountain Biking Club recently formed has a website:
www.bhutanmtb.com Some
tour companies offer cycling tours which can be dangerous as
local drivers don’t expect bikes on mountain roads. Local bike
tours around Paro, Thimpu, and Bhumthang are enjoyable and safe.
Golf
Thimpu has an international standard golf course which rents
equipment. There are small courses in Haa and Deothang. The
scenic Thimpu course is above Trashi Chloe Dzong. Green fees are
$25 US and clubs can be rented for $15. An exceptional golf
experience in the Himalayas at an exceptional price.
Tennis and Squash
There are two tennis courts and a squash court in Thimpu at the
Changlimithang Stadium.
Swimming
There is a swimming pool at the Sports Complex in Thimpu which
has a gym, tennis, and basketball courts.
River Rafting & Kayaking in Bhutan
The Department of Tourism promotes rafting as
friendly to the environment and people. Bhutan is thought to have
the best rafting on earth. Since 1999 small groups have explored 14
rivers and 22 different runs from Class II to Class V. One great day
trip on the Pho Chhu requires a hike upriver to Samdinka. The run
includes two Class III rapids and ends with the “Wrathful Buddha”
rapids at Punakha Dzong. Another wonderful day trip on the Mo Chhu
begins above the Punakha Dzong at Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten
passing one of the Queen’s residences, the King's weekend retreat,
and some beautiful scenery. The fees for rafting and kyaking are the
same as cultural and trekking tours with additional charges for
equipment.
